White urad dal is good source of protein, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B3 (niacin) and calcium. Black gram is used as a pulse. In the form of a confection, used for leucorrhea and seminal debility. Urad is also useful in the treatment of digestive disorders such as gastritis, dysentery, diarrhea, and liver disorders. But most significantly it is used to treat diabetes as medicine as well as part of diet for diabetes.
- Sinus Headaches: For headaches due to sinus, roast black gram, grey sand and common salt in a pan and then transfer the heated mixture into a cloth bag. Bring this hot cloth bag close to your nostrils and take deep breaths as if you are smelling the cloth. Continue the process for 10-15 minutes. Make sure your head is covered while and after smelling. The inhaling of vapors immediately relieves blocked nose and headache caused by sinus. OR Take black gram powder, camphor and red silk cloth ash. Mix all ingredients with water to form a paste and apply on forehead in case of sinus headache.
- Inflammation: Black gram roots used as a poultice for inflammations and abscesses.
- Hair Growth: Washing the hair with a paste of cooked black gram dal and fenugreek seeds lengthens the hair. A fine paste made from pigeon pea or red gram (arhar dal) can also be applied regularly with beneficial results on bald patches.
- Sperm Count: In Indian Ayurveda urad dal tree leaves can be prescribed to increase sperm count because of its invaluable property as an aphrodisiac.
- Vitiligo White Patches: Application of a paste created with the use of black gram powder and water on the affected area can help in the treatment of vitiligo patches (leukoderma). Or Take 100 gram of black gram and soak it into water for 2 hours. Blend it to make a thick paste. Apply this paste on the affected areas and wash off after it dries. Do this for about four to five months for better results.
- Joint Pain: Oil extracts of the pulse is used externally in rheumatism, contracted knee, stiff shoulder.
